Prime will offer the Sun systems with its industry-leading CADDS(TM) software as well as its Medusa, THEDA and GIS software. The Sun/Prime solution is aimed at the computer-aided engineering, design and manufacturing (CAE/CAD/CAM) as well as the computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) marketplaces. Prime has selected SPARC as its principal RISC architecture for all Prime workstations and servers. "We believe that Sun's SPARC technology is fast becoming the industry's top RISC solution," said Robert A. Fischer, Prime's corporate vice president of marketing and business development. "We looked at other RISC alternatives, but SPARC was clearly our number one choice because of its scalability, superior system and application software offerings and leadership position in the market." Sun and Prime have a long-time relationship that began when Computervision -- now a division of the $1.6 billion Prime Computer -- became one of Sun's first resellers. Prime has remained one of Sun's largest partners. Its CADDS software is sold exclusively on Sun workstations. Besides reselling SPARC workstations from Sun, the company plans to license the SPARC achitecture for possible use in future systems it will develop. Prime is one of many large vendors that have licensed SPARC or will resell SPARC systems from Sun. The current installed base of SPARC computers is 30,000, a number that is expected to triple this year. In addition, SPARC system developers are now designing a range of machines. These systems can take advantage of the industry's largest selection of third-party RISC software, called SPARCware(TM). Already more than 1,100 applications have been verified by Sun as being SPARC compatible. Prime Computer, Inc., with headquarters in Natick, Mass., supplies integrated solutions to the international manufacturing, government, financial services, education and scientific marketplaces. It is the world's second largest supplier of CAE/CAD/CAM systems. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX(TM) operating system and productivity software. ### SPARC and SPARCware are trademarks of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
