The product was developed jointly by Relational Technology and Sun Microsystems, Inc., of Mountain View, Calif.. INGRES/ Simplify is based on the OPEN LOOK graphical user interface standard and represents a long-awaited next step in DBMS (database management system) user interface technology. It provides a highly visual, interactive method of data access that requires little training or support. The announcement of INGRES/Simplify signals the introduction of a new generation of tools designed to take full advantage of the inherent strengths of today's graphic workstations. It greatly simplifies database access, speeds end-user querying and reporting, and enhances database management. These new tools enable non-technical users to access corporate data without learning complex query languages and requiring the assistance of over-burdened MIS developers. Users can access data stored on the user's own computer, on other computers attached to the corporate network, from data distributed across multiple computers and even from non-INGRES databases via INGRES gateway technology. INGRES/Simplify consists of four components: DataBrowse - a graphical query editor and data displayer which allows users to construct their queries visually and conveniently browse through the results. ReportWrite - an interactive report formatting utility that makes it easy to generate custom reports. Using the mouse, users can alter the placement of components such as text or data fields, and add headers, footers, subtotals, and other features. SchemaDesign - a productivity tool employing entity-relationship modeling techniques to display a visual representation of the database. It allows users to see at a glance what data is available, how it is related, and how to put it to use. INGRES Utilities - provides access to the standard INGRES programs and utilities via prompted push-button menu access. "INGRES/Simplify represents a major breakthrough in RDBMS tools technology that could not have been achieved without the close collaboration of Relational Technology, the traditional leader in RDBMS tools, and Sun Microsystems, an aggressive innovator in the workstation marketplace," said Christopher H. Greendale, Relational Technology's vice president of marketing. "The introduction of INGRES/Simplify proves again that Relational Technology's partnership strategy results in significant and tangible product advances that benefit our customers, our partners and the industry in general." "The introduction of available OPEN LOOK-based products is important to Sun -- particularly for an area like databases -- which traditionally have character-based tools," said Dick Gorman, director of desktop software product marketing for Sun Microsystems. "Because INGRES/Simplify is based on the OPEN LOOK graphical user interface, users do not need to understand complicated database query and report generation languages." The relationship between Sun and Relational Technology was announced in November 1987 when the companies agreed they would develop and distribute a next generation,window-based query, reporting and database management tool for the workstation computing environment. In August 1989, the companies strengthened their partnership by signing a strategic vendor agreement to cooperatively engineer and market UNIX-based products. Under this new agree- ment, the two companies will work closely to enhance each other's products as well as engage in mutually beneficial sales and marketing activities. INGRES/Simplify is available to users of Sun-3, Sun-4 and SPARCstation1 products running INGRES. The product will sell for approximately $350 per user and will be available within 30 days. Relational Technology is a leading supplier of distributed information management software. The company's primary product is the INGRES RDBMS, which enables organizations to quickly access data spanning a variety of computer systems connected in a network. The INGRES family of products includes tools for developing applications and gateways for accessing data across hetero- geneous computer operating environments. Relational Technology is a publicly-held corporation whose shares are traded on NASDAQ/NMS with ticker symbol RELY.
