The new products expand upon Sun's existing offerings, reaffirming Sun's long-time commitment to distributed workgroup computing based on industry standards. The new products--part of SunNet(TM), Sun's new designation for its comprehensive suite of networking products--include powerful new network management packages, along with products that further enhance high-performance connectivity, including a new controller that links Sun workstations to fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) networks. The new products include: SunNet Manager, which offers the industry's richest network management solution for distributed workgroups that use the TCP/IP communication protocol. TCP/IP-based systems represent by far the largest installed base of any open networking protocol. SunNet Manager is a multi-function package for managing network resources, from computers and bridges to network applications and services. It keeps track of how network resources are functioning, alerting users to any failures or potential failures. The product is "extensible", permitting users to easily add new network devices, protocols or tools to the SunNet Manager framework. SunNet License, a software license management package that offers an unprecedented combination of flexibility, scalability and ease of use for license management across a network. SunNet License allows "concurrent usage" licensing methods, under which software licenses "float" between multiple users. This contrasts with today's typical licensing arrangements, which require a company to buy an individual license for every user who requires access to a given software package. Software vendors will benefit from the package's support of multiple licensing methods and security features. The FDDI/Dual Attach Controller, called FDDI/DX(TM), is a VME board that lets Sun users take advantage of the large capacity, fault recovery and increased security features of the FDDI network standard. Sun is one of the first system vendors offering an FDDI product. SunLink(TM) Channel Gateway, the first complete hardware and software solution for connecting Sun workstations to IBM mainframes. It allows Sun computers and IBM System 370-compatible mainframes to exchange files and messages as well as to submit jobs and commands, using the IBM NJE protocol. High-speed Serial Interface (HSI) is a VME board product that allows Sun networks to utilize high-speed transmission lines such as T1 and CEPT for simple, cost-effective interconnection of Sun networks. SunNet Based on Standards SunNet includes a wealth of products built upon industry standards, such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, X.25 and others. In addition, SunNet offers users a migration path to emerging standards like FDDI and OSI. Included in the SunNet family are the SunLink products, which allow connectivity with IBM and DEC systems and PCs. At the heart of the SunNet line is a group of products called Open Network Computing (ONC(TM)), a platform for the development of distributed applications. A variety of network services run on this platform, such as Sun's de facto industry standard Network File System (NFS(TM)), licensed by more than 260 organizations worldwide. Another group of products in the SunNet line are the just-introduced packages for network management. Together, SunNet products allow distributed workgroup networks to be built out of mixed-vendor, geographically separated computing resources. "SunNet is similar in breadth to the networking solutions of companies many times larger than Sun," said Larry Garlick, vice president of distributed systems. "The new products raise the ante for vendors wishing to compete as suppliers of distributed computing solutions." Unlike vendors of proprietary products, Sun's strategy is to leverage a company's existing computer resources by connecting these systems to innovative new products while migrating to industry standards. "This gives users the freedom to incorporate other vendors' equipment and technologies into their networks," said Garlick. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### SunNet, ONC, NFS, FDDI/DX and SunLink are trademarks of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
