-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANDERSEN CONSULTING TO BECOME COMMERCIAL INTEGRATOR OF SUN SYSTEMS SunFLASH Vol 11 #13 November 1989 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --November 28, 1989-- Sun Microsystems today announced that Andersen Consulting has signed an agreement to remarket Sun's entire line of computers and software as part of systems integration solutions for the commercial market. The companies estimate that the agreement will produce at least $10 million in sales of Sun equipment during the first year. Andersen Consulting and Sun already have several joint commercial projects underway, such as the development of software for imaging and document management, distributed databases, computer integrated manufacturing and artificial intelligence for commercial applications. These projects are aimed at providing solutions for customers in the securities, insurance, airline transportation and manufacturing industries, although other commercial markets are being explored. A newly formed unit within Andersen Consulting called the New Age Systems Group will handle the commercial systems integration projects built around Sun workstations. The group was set up in response to customer demand for powerful UNIX(R)-based workstations for distributed computing. According to Richard J. Stuckey, a partner for Andersen Consulting, UNIX workstations are expected to be one of the major growth areas for the firm. "Workstations, such as those from Sun, give our clients a lot of performance and power in an easy-to-use package. Our clients are getting very excited about what they can do with them," Stuckey said. Sun believes its commercial customers are well served through strategic agreements with integrators. "They offer industry expertise, project management skills, custom software development and additional service and support capabilities," said Ed Zander, vice president of corporate marketing at Sun. To demonstrate the commercial potential of its integration solutions using Sun equipment, Andersen Consulting has set up prototypes at its System Integration Centers in Evanston, Ill., and Dallas, Tex. In both locations, Sun systems demonstrate computer integrated manufacturing applications. In Evanston, another Sun system serves as a merchandiser workbench, running software for retail marketing professionals. Andersen consulting has helped organizations apply technology for competitive advantage since 1954 when it installed the first computer for commercial use. The firm provides business, industry and technology skills, and the services necessary to integrate complex business systems. The practice's worldwide client base has access to 16,000 highly trained professionals. In addition to information technology services, the Arthur Andersen Worldwide Organization provides professional services in accounting and audit, tax and professional education to clients through 231 offices in 49 countries.
