-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW ISAM TOOL FROM SUN FIRST TO ALLOW RECORD MANAGEMENT WITHIN NETWORKED APPLICATIONS SunFLASH Vol 11 #3 November 1989 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --November 13, 1989-- Sun Microsystems today introduced NetISAM(TM), an X/Open-compliant tool that lets application developers easily add record management capabilities to UNIX(R) applications. Developed by Sun, NetISAM (Indexed Sequential Access Method) is the only such product on the market for networked applications. While other ISAM products only allow local access to data, applications designed with NetISAM let users store and access files located anywhere on the network, transparently. Record management is an essential part of many applications, enabling users to add, delete, change and retrieve data by "key value" (a unique part of a file, such as a social security number). NetISAM offers a very low-cost alternative for support of applications which require a simple access method for structured data, but which do not need the full functionality of a database management system. NetISAM library functions are callable from any programming language. It was designed for programmer ease of use, with broad functionality and helpful features such as multiple indices. In end user applications, NetISAM is capable of speeding up record management applications by two to ten times compared to other ISAM products. NetISAM is the only product currently available that is based on the latest X/Open XPG-3 specification. Among the special capabilities NetISAM gives applications is variable length record support. In addition, it has a utility that quickly and automatically migrates applications written using other ISAM solutions to NetISAM. Migration from C-ISAM -- the leading ISAM on UNIX -- can be accomplished with no recoding. NetISAM was designed for a client/server model of distributed computing in which applications reside on "client" workstations and shared data resides on one or more servers. Off-loading client applications from the server enables NetISAM to support large communities of end users distributed throughout the network. NetISAM is available now across Sun's full product line and is priced very competitively with other ISAM tools. The software, documentation and single right-to-use license costs $1,000, with additional right-to-use licenses priced at $500 each. Low-cost licenses are offered for larger sites, with prices decreasing with quantity. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### NetISAM is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.
