-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN MICROSYSTEMS TO OPEN R&D CENTER IN FRANCE SunFLASH Vol 11 #5 November 1989 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PARIS, France --November 13,1989-- Sun Microsystems announced today at a press conference in Paris that it will establish the company's first European research and development center, to be called the International Center for Network Computing. Located near Paris, the new R&D center will pioneer innovative networking and communications products that will be part of Sun's networking product family, SunNet M . The new products will be designed for worldwide markets. The center will focus on development work in areas such as high-performance OSI products, OSI network management facilities and programmer aids for international network computing. The center staff will also extend Sun's representation in various European standards organizations. "The decision to locate Sun's first European R&D facility in France was in part based upon the strong OSI networking talent located there," stated Darryl Barbe, vice president/general manager of Sun's European Operations group. Sun is a multi-national company with 45 percent of its revenues derived from the international marketplace. Because of this strong international presence, Sun is continuing to invest in manufacturing and R&D centers around the world. "This also enables us to tap into the rich talent pool of people around the world," said Barbe. Besides the planned development center in France, Sun also has an R&D center in Montreal, Canada, that specializes in telecommunications software. In addition, Sun has broken ground on a manfacturing facility in Linlithgow, Scotland. Currently, there is a search underway to locate a center director, who will report to Larry Garlick, vice president of distributed systems at company headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. The location of the center will initially be at the Sun France offices in La Boursidiere, outside of Paris. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### SunNet is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
