PLEXUS XDP SOFTWARE TO RUN ON SUN'S SPARC PLATFORM MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-- June 7, 1989-- Sun Microsystems and Plexus Software, Inc., today announced that Plexus' Extended Data Processing (XDP) information management software will run on Sun's SPARC(TM) servers. The two companies have also agreed to participate in joint marketing activities that will support the sales efforts of each company's products. Plexus joins Sun's third-party Catalyst program, which includes more than 2,500 products from 1,450 vendors. Plexus, a leading supplier of document image processing software, employs a unique method of handling compound (text, data and images) data by storing myriad data formats in a single relational database. The Sun/Plexus solution allows users to quickly access, organize and disseminate information from one fully-integrated database, eliminating the need to invest and maintain different systems for different kinds of information. Plexus will offer Sun SPARC servers as a computing platform for its XDP software, answering users needs for a Plexus-based solution running on non-proprietary hardware. The Sun/Plexus document image processsing systems will be sold by system integrators to customers in a wide variety of markets. These markets include federal and state governments, health care and pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, banks, financial service organizations and other major industries such as transportation and telecommunications. For example, Grumman Data Systems chose the Sun/Plexus solution in its bid for the multimillion-dollar Image Processing System contract from the Environmental Protection Agency. Document image processing systems represent a new generation of information management products that enable users to capture, store, manipulate and retrieve many different kinds of information -- including images, graphics, text, alphanumeric data and voice.
