SUN LOCAL USER GROUP PROGRAM TO BE LAUNCHED MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. July 24, 1989 Sun Microsystems and Sun User Group, Inc. (SUG), a worldwide organization, are co-sponsoring a program to help create and support Local User Groups (LUGs) for those who use Sun workstations and other Sun equipment. The Sun Local User Group Support Center is being established to assist in the launching of local chapters. After these are set up, the support center will provide the new LUGs and any existing chapters with a variety of services, including technical video tapes, literature packs, and a guide for starting and building a chapter. These services are offered to reduce the cost and time required to begin and run a successful user group. A reference list of local groups will be available for those wishing to join a group in their area. Additionally, discounts on Sun equipment will be available to qualified LUGs for use in managing the group and providing services to its members. There are no fees required by the LUGs to receive these services from the LUG Support Center. However, approval and registration is necessary from Sun and SUG to qualify for support. Chapters can be represented on a Local User Group Council that will meet periodically with Sun and SUG. The program will support United States-based local user groups but the program plan will be available to those who wish to establish chapters in other countries. "This will be a valuable program both for Sun and its users," said Margie Davis, executive director of the Sun User Group at Sun Microsystems. "We recognize the importance of local user groups in helping users share information and experiences relating to their Sun equipment. We want to foster this exchange between users and also between users and Sun. We see the LUGs as a key part of this exchange. Since local groups are run by volunteers and typically do not collect fees, these services are designed to help make the tasks easier, build membership and include some tangible deliverables at the same time," she said. According to William Toth, president of SUG, Inc. "The LUG Support Center will offer a wealth of services aimed at local groups, who can then serve individual users. We feel that by working with Sun to strengthen these groups, we'll develop an increasingly effective community of end users."
