-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3rd Party Product Announcement From Usenet SunFLASH Vol 12 #11 December 1989 Forwarding of this announment from usenet does not represent an andorsement by Sun Microsystems. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: sales@uninet.cpd.com Newsgroups: comp.newprod Subject: serial and parallel ports on SCSI for desktop workstations Date: 11 Dec 89 15:28:02 GMT Organization: Uninet, peripherals division of Custom Product Design Inc., Santa Ana, CA Did you ever want to add serial ports to your "non-expandible" workstation without having to use network protocols such as TCP to access them? Ever wanted to add a low cost printer but found out that they only have a Centronics parallel interface, or wanted to add a high speed laser printer but couldn't because serial ports couldn't handle the required thruput? Ever needed support of ALL modem and control signal lines to connect a modem? Uninet Peripherals has the answer to these questions. It's called SLAT. Use the SCSI bus to transparently add 4 or 8 RS232 serial ports and a Centronics parallel interface to these and other machines: Sun 3, Sun 4 including Sparcstation, Decstation, Vaxstation, Macintosh. SLAT offers these features: o serial and parallel ports supported through the standard tty driver o no new drivers required, no kernel rebuilds necessary o uses only 1 SCSI address o co-exists peacefully with other SCSI devices such as disks and tapes o supports all modem control signals o supports input/output xon/xoff throttling at the SLAT level o uses less CPU overhead than serial ports in the workstation o serial thruput of over 20K characters per second o SCSI xfer rate over 2.5 Mbytes per second o uart baud rates to 76.8K and beyond o support of arbitrary baud rates (can you say MIDI ?) The SLAT can be ordered in 2 configurations: SL41-1 4 RS232 serial, 1 Centronics parallel $900 SL81-1 8 RS232 serial, 1 Centronics parallel $1600 Host software media, documentation, and a license costs $75. Only a single software license is needed per site. Various SCSI cables are available for $85 each. The serial ports use RJ45 connectors. The parallel port uses a DB25 connector. Serial and parallel port cables are available through most computer stores.
