Milton Osborne sets their journey (and Garnier's later involvement in Tonkin) in historical context and also hints at some of the later controversy surrounding the expedition, but _River Road to China_ is basically a grand tale of adventure. I found it really intriguing: the whole story was new to me, as I suspect it will be to most Anglo-Saxon readers. -- %T River Road to China %S The Mekong River Expedition, 1866-73 %A Milton Osborne %I Readers Union %C Newton Abbot %D 1976 %O hardcover, bibliography, index %P xx,249pp %K exploration, history, Southeast Asia Danny Yee (danny@cs.su.oz.au) 20 June 1995 ------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright (C) Danny Yee 1995 : Comments and criticism welcome ------------------------------------------------------------- URL http://www.anatomy.su.oz.au/danny/book-reviews/index.html -------------------------------------------------------------
