The Penguin History of Canada Kenneth McNaught Penguin 1988 pp. 434 [ history ] This book should be titled "The Penguin *Political* History of Canada" - apart from a final chapter on Canada's cultural development it concentrates almost exclusively on people, parties, wars, constitutional changes, etc. This produces a rather dissatisfying overall effect, but on the plus side the old-fashioned chronological narrative makes for a very readable and smooth flowing book. It needs following up with a good economic and social history, but the Penguin History isn't a bad read if you are stuck indoors for an afternoon with nothing else to do.
