The Difference Engine William Gibson & Bruce Sterling Bantam 1991 pp. 429 [ science fiction ] The two leading "cyberspace" authors have joined together to produce this alternate history novel. The story is that Charles Babbage *did* build his Analytical Engine and that a steam driven information age has developed. Britain has come under the control of capitalists and intellectuals under the leadership of none other than Lord Byron. The story is the kind of political/underworld/espionage thriller one would expect from the authors. Minor complaints about the beginning and the end, but altogether a fun read with some cute ideas, Danny Yee (danny@cs.su.oz.au) 1/4/92
