Summary: A new book on technology explores possible applications of 
micromechanics and microsystem technology (MST). MST is based on new 
developments in precision mechanics and micro-electronics. The systems
that become possible with these technologies have dimensions of less 
than a millimetre. Besides present and future applications the book 
discusses conditions for successful implementation of MST. 

Besides an overview of the basic technologies the publication 
discusses four fields of application in detail:
- microsystems @andinstrumentation
- microsystems and medical technology
- microsystems and consumer products
- microsystems and agriculture

The publication 'Microsystem technology: exploring opportunities'
is the result of a two-year exploration of microsystem technology (MST). 
The Netherlands Study Centre for Technology Trends (STT) coordinated and 
organized the project. For this project, STT has been able to draw on the 
knowledge andexperience of a large number of European experts. As there
has been criticism from industry of the technology-push nature of MST, 
we have done our best to focus principally on the need for microsystems.
 
This book is a must for those interested in current technological trends 
and how they can (and will) alter our jobs and personal lives.
