In the first paragraph of the Introduction. Those of us who are barraged with calls for "point-and-click-everything" can be equally heartened by the statement that the Internet is not for dummies, though not only for nerds: "It is for those people who are willing to think and to learn." Having said that, this guide is particularly suited to the new user unsure of what to use the Internet for. The material is of limited technical depth, and is delivered with a wry humour which lightens the tone but seldom slips into the sarcasm of other works. A number of interesting references may give some initial frustration since they don't contain full citations to the references they describe. The Index, however, is very helpful, as are the appendices listing archie servers and gopher, WAIS and World Wide Web client sites. Those who know what they want from the Internet may wish to look at more specific and detailed works. Too, this volume does tend to emphasize Unix and the Unix mail program, and has seven entire chapters devoted to Usenet news. (There is also the frequent recommendation to purchase "A Student's Guide to Unix" by one Harley Hahn. The Index rather falls down here: it only cites the work once.) Well worth considering for the beginning browser. copyright Robert M.
