So Microsoft has invested several hundred million dollars on an upgrade called Windows 95 that the company says will be available the first half of next year. Meanwhile, Chicago entrepreneur Ted Yeager has taken a pretty big step in making current editions of Windows understandable to just about anybody even as the world waits for Windows 95. Yeager's idea is "Windows Now," as opposed to Windows 95, a $19.99 stocking-stuffer book that should hit the spot for the millions of families adding IBM-compatible machines to this year's holiday gift lists. The book is a fine way to start a column about some of the niftier lower- cost computer-oriented gifts available this whopper of a season when personal computer sales are booming as never before. Yeager's partner, a computer professional named Robert Medved, wrote the book but frankly, in this rare case the writing has very little to do with the book's power. "Windows Now" is bound in an easel like the books they use to use in high school typing classes. You stand it up alongside your keyboard, and the vertical pages show pictures of the Windows screens that will appear on your computer as you make each move with mouse and keyboard. The flat page tells you what to do with each screen. It walks you through every move you need to make to get Windows working, including the basics, like how to double-click a mouse button, all the way through opening, closing, saving and executing files. There also are instructions for the small programs like the calendar and calculator included with WIndows. I've never seen a better way to show a newcomer the Windows basics. The book is available for $19.99 by calling 1-800-917-8400 Ext. 21 _Dennis_Gleeson_KINGS_PARK,_NY_RIME->5190_or_->YOURSOFTWARE_ _Internet:_Dennis.Gleeson@woodybbs.com_ --- * CMPQwk #1.42-18 * UNREGISTERED EVALUATION COPY
