By: Jouni Miettunen (jon@stekt.oulu.fi) Date: 7 February 1995 Author: David N.L. Levy (Editor) Title: Computer Games II Pages: 547 Year: 1988 ISBN: 0-387-96609-9 0-540-96609-9 Publ: Springer-Verlag (1988 address, may have changed) 175 Fifth Avenue New York New York 10010 USA This is a collection of magazine articles from various sources between 1959 and 1984 edited and collected by an International Chess Master and President of a strategy game company David Levy. The articles are mostly research reports, (master's) thesis' and technical analysis of some interesting parts of the selected game. This is not a beginner's guide. The book collects the hard to find articles into one handy reference. If you are sturdy, you might find all these by wading through decades of Communications of ACM, Information Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Journal et al. but few people would have stamina to do it or recognize the good stuff - even if they had access to all the magazines. I'd like to stress the information is not outdated, even though most articles are from 70's and early 80's, on the contrary. The material covers the basics of computer strategy game programming using familiar games to demonstrate the methods of knowledge-based systems, learning algorithms, tree searches, pattern recognition etc. This will provide you a solid foundation, where to start developing your own game logic. You will not only avoid reinventing the wheel(s), but will gain also a "wealth of interesting and useful material". If you share any interest into strategy game programming or want to know how computers play games, you want this book. The problem might be finding it, unfortunately. I wish there was more books like this. This volume covers the-name-of-the-game (number of articles): Bridge (4), Chemin-de-Fer (1), Dama (1), Dominoes (2), Go (12), Go-Moku (4), Halma (1), Hearts (1), Othello (1), Poker (3), Push-Over (1) and Qubic (1) followed by an extensive 31 page bibliography.
