REVIEW: THE INTERNET YELLOW PAGES, THIRD EDITION, Harley Hahn Osborne 1996 This mammoth effort contains over 5,000 listings of what's on the Net and where to find it. The author of THE INTERNET COMPLETE REFERENCE 2nd Ed. has given us another excellent Net reference book, THE INTERNET YELLOW PAGES. The third edition, more than twice the size of the first, is jam packed with interesting stuff that's just sitting there, free for the taking. I bought the INTERNET YELLOW PAGES first edition on the spot two years ago and was absolutely amazed with the amount of material it contained. The 1996 edition absolutely bowled me over with its sheer size - it's literally a phone-book sized directory filled with on-line goodies, and all of them are total freebies available to anyone who knows where they are and how to get them. There are no paid ads (except the ones Harley wrote "for fun".) The humorous and entertaining style make the book a pleasure to browse through and shop for neat stuff to get. I'm very pleased and honored to be one of the listed resources (book reviews) in the 1996 edition. The INTERNET YELLOW PAGES does not claim to teach you how to use the Internet. It does, however, cross-reference various resources to the appropriate chapter in THE INTERNET COMPLETE REFERENCE 2nd Ed., an excellent tutorial and handbook for mastering everything you need to know to enjoy the various goodies contained in the INTERNET YELLOW PAGES. I recall seeing another Internet "yellow pages" published by another company last year, but upon examining it in a local book shop it was apparent that it was nowhere near the same caliber of the Harley Hahn effort. If memory serves me, it was full of expensive on-line information service providers that are very useful to those who can afford them and justify the expense for business or research purposes. I understand that this directory is still around with a name change, so the only INTERNET YELLOW PAGES you should see is this one from Osborne McGraw-Hill. Included are tons of FTP sites, mailing lists, newsgroups, TELNET addresses, and World Wide Web URLs! Its an Internaut's delight - a feast of finds! The listings are categorized and arranged alphabetically and are easy to find quickly. Of course, THE INTERNET YELLOW PAGES doesn't contain "everything" available on the Net (and, obviously, never will) but it is, in my opinion, the most comprehensive directory of the Net's treasures currently available in printed form. Also included as a humorous aside is Harley's list of 25 things to do when you should be working. My recommendation: Get this book and budget for a new one every so often because its absolutely essential to have a current copy right by your keyboard if exploring the Net is one of your interests. You should also suggest that your local public library get a copy for the reference section. If you only purchase one Net book this year, it should be THE INTERNET YELLOW PAGES. %T The Internet Yellow Pages, Third Edition %A Harley Hahn %I Osborne McGraw-Hill %C Berkeley California %D 1996 %O $29.95 %G ISBN:0-07-882182-7 %P 830 pp %K Internet, computer networks (C) 1996 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net mc@pcix.com DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
