REVIEW: INTERNET SLICK TRICKS - SMART SECRETS REVEALED Random House 1994 Here's another goodie from "the Issac Asimov of personal computing" Alfred Glossbrenner, author of over 19 books on this subject. This one is for users who are Internet-aware and is a kind of advanced beginner's book if this makes any sense. It is classified as a novice/intermediate title for IBM/Mcintosh users, which means just about everybody. A while ago I reviewed Glossbrenner's INTERNET 101 and, to be sure, there is some duplication of material, but there is plenty of new stuff to make this book very useful in its own right. There's enough Net introductory material to indoctrinate a total beginner, yet it is presented in such a fashion that someone with a bit of Net experience will learn something too. Once this is out of the way, SLICK TRICKS will show you hundreds of tricks and tips for tapping hidden Internet treasures, what's good, what's bad, what's great - and what to avoid. Some of the subjects discussed are connecting to the Net, hardware/software info, the best Net tools, an extensive chapter on FTP and using ARCHIE to find stuff and how to work with files once you get them. In addition, SLICK TRICKS covers images, sounds and animation, E-mail tricks, newsgroups, mailing lists, discussion groups and games. Finally, there are more tricks for GOPHER, VERONICA and "friends". The final chapter, TREASURES ONLINE gives us 39 slick things to do on the Internet. I found SLICK TRICKS to be an informative book in keeping with the high standards I have come to expect from a Glossbrenner offering.
