REVIEW: BEST OF THE NET, Seth Godin, ed. IDG Books, 1995 Here's another guidebook to the Internet's treasures which should keep any serious Internaut occupied for weeks! Editor Godin posted a request for nominations where he requested readers to send in their suggestions for the "best stuff on the Net - everything from newsgroups to gopher and WWW sites.....tell us the best games you've played, great mailing lists you've joined..." It only took a handful of postings and the results are contained in this interesting volume. As Seth Godin stated in his posting: "....this isn't intended to be a comprehensive listing of everything available on the Net. It's just the best stuff according to the people who are actually using the Internet, instead of just writing about it." This book is the result. Subjects range from Acronyms to Zines and everything in between, such as Baseball, Beavis and Butt-head, CIA, Hackers, Crime, Disney, Drugs, Elvis, Encryption, Flames, IRC, Letterman, Limbaugh, M*A*S*H, Military, MUDs, Pizza, Prozac, Monty Python, Recipes,Sex, Shareware, The Simpsons, The Terrorist Handbook, Viruses and a whole lot more. The book is well presented - you can read through it from beginning to end or just pick it up and go to any particular topic of your choice. BEST OF THE NET is loaded with photographs, illustrations and sidebars that make it an entertaining read in short segments while you're sitting in front of your terminal looking for something to amuse and entertain yourself. This is definitely a great book to keep on your desk to alleviate momentary boredom. %T BEst of the Net %A Seth Godin, editor %I IDG Books %C Foster City California %D 1995 %O $22.99 %G ISBN: 1-56884-313-5 %P 430 pp, paperbound %K Internet, computer networks, (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
