REVIEW: INTERNET HANDBOOK FOR LAW LIBRARIANS James Milles Glanville Publishers This handbook, written for a highly specialized audience, was authored by the Head of Computer Services at Saint Louis University Law Library, James Milles who is also the Moderator of a BITNET newsgroup (bit.listserv.nettrain) for Internet instructors and teachers. Its main value is listing the main sources of information of interest to law librarians and how to use the Net to search and obtain it. INTERNET HANDBOOK FOR LAW LIBRARIANS provides a thumbnail description of other networks available - such as Law:Forum, BITNET and ABAnet as well as a brief history of the Internet and NREN itself. Also covered are the major building blocks such as Mail, TELNET, FTP, as well as "newer" tools like WAIS, GOPHER and the World-Wide Web. Of major interest are brief description of mailing lists, UNIX and BU LISTSERV commands, Law, Law-related, Library and Miscellaneous mailing lists (and how to find more), various library and academic on-line catalogs, other Federal and State electronic bulletin boards, Freenets and menu access systems of particular interest to law librarians. In addition, there is a chapter with suggestions for Internet research strategy. The appendices include E-mail etiquette, starting and running a discussion group and a list of bibliographical references. My main critique of INTERNET HANDBOOK FOR LAW LIBRARIANS is that it is somewhat dated (1993) given the fast changing world of the Internet. The bibliography particularly is lacking. The main sites and address seem to be current, although I have not verified any of them. Is it worth $100.00? Well, certainly not to the general Net user like you and me, but it may well be to the specialized user for whom the handbook was intended. It is included at no additional charge with a subscription to the Law Library Information Report series (price unknown) available from Glanville Publishers Inc, (75 Main Street, Dobbs Ferry NY 10522). %T Internet Handbook for Law Librarians %A James Milles %I Glanville Publishers Inc %C Dobbs Ferry New York %D 1993 %O $100.00, included with subscription to Law Library Information Reports %G ISBN: 0-87802-093-4 %P 64 pp, paperbound %K Internet for Law Librarians (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
