REVIEW: COMPUTER SECURITY BASICS, O'Reilly & Associates 1991 Deborah Russell & G.T. Gangemi Sr. Have you ever heard of an Orange Book? I've heard of a Blue Book (and of course the old little Black Book I had in my single days ;^) Well, gentle reader, there is indeed an Orange Book - its a U.S Government standard and most Government equipment acquisitions require "Orange Book" certification. So, now that you know what it means, what is it? This is but one security-oriented question answered by COMPUTER SECURITY BASICS. This landmark handbook has been around for a long time (1991) and although it is about five years old it still seems amazingly current. Of course, it focuses on the BASIC principles. Specifics may change, but the basics don't, at least not very often. Some of the topics covered in COMPUTER SECURITY BASICS include history, access controls, encryption, communications/networks, physical security and TEMPEST. In case you're wondering, TEMPEST is a three-letter agency program to analyze and prevent "emanations" from computers and peripherals that can be intercepted and intrepreted/used by others. COMPUTER SECURITY BASICS is an interesting read at least - at best it can help system administrators and users understand the basics of what computer security is all about. There are numerous, more focused books available; several from O'Reilly & Associates, but an an overview, this old timer's just the thing. %T Computer Security Basics %A Deborah Russell & G.T.
