Unlike other "Mosaic handbooks", it gives very little detail on the operation and configuration of clients. (Interestingly, however, it clings to Mosaic as *the* HTTP client.) There are some rough divisions, by topic, to the material, but this is hardly even a guide to where you would find something. Sites giving book reviews are listed under any of "Libraries" (section III), "Reader's Corner" (section IV), and "Books, Games and Music" (section V). Appendix C lists the fully qualified domain names (but not URLs) for 4600 W3 servers. Given a listing (itself incomplete) some months back, of 18,000 sites, this book cannot be exhaustive, but that is an impossible task. Those sites chosen for description in the book are interesting, and the outlines give a reasonable overview. (These are seldom complete, either: the entry for the Vatican Exhibit gives no hint of the art treasures on display.) It is intriguing to note that the (very brief) introduction describes W3 as a sort of "front-end" to other Internet tools. (This ignores the fact that only a tiny fraction of the resources on the net are linked into W3 pages anywhere, that search tools are almost non-existent and that the major usage of W3 clients to "front-end" Internet applications still requires you to know the applications.) The listings, however, prove that W3 is a separate tool, with its own uses and functions. Some of the server sites could provide the information by telnet, menus or mail-server, but the emphasis is on the graphical, the amusing--and, very often, the trivial. The book includes a CD-ROM which contains Ventana Mosaic (apparently in both Windows and Mac versions) and a copy of the book in a hypertext format. copyright Robert M.
