Some writers write a many-page Introduction.  I wrote none until 
my agent forced me into one.  Here's the entire Introduction:

     We believe an astounding number of things.
     One of the most astounding things we believe is that 
     everything we believe is true.
     When something is accepted as common knowledge, we rarely 
     think of checking it.
     "Of course the world's largest pyramid is in Egypt.  
     Everybody knows that."
     The world's largest pyramid isn't in Egypt, though.
     We all take pride in what we know, and in increasing our 
     stock of knowledge.
     We also like to be surprised, and take a certain perverse 
     pleasure in learning that a commonly believed "fact" is 
     false.
