REVIEW: ATLAS TO THE WORLD WIDE WEB, Bob Powell & Karen Wickre Ziff-Davis 1995 If 1994 was the Year of the Internet then 1995 is the Year of the Web - the World Wide Web, that is. This new guide from Ziff Davis Press is just what its' title proclaims it to be - an Atlas to the World Wide Web that takes you on a virtual exploratory journey to the far reaches of the Web. In addition to the hundreds of Web "sites" covered, the ATLAS tells you everything you need to know to connect to the Web, modem options required, picking a service provider and more suited for the newcomer. Authors Powell and Wickre explain some of the things you need to know about the Web, including what a URL is and how it works, etc. This book is loaded with extra goodies, including the PC/COMPUTING Road Map of the World Wide Web and a CD-ROM full of neat stuff such as the book's complete text, fully hyperlinked, Enhanced NCSA Mosaic for Windows and Netlink software that (after you register) will give you a direct PPP/SLIP connection to the Web. One of the most valuable chapters tells you how to build your own Web "home" page. This can be for fun, a hobby or interest or even a business or commercial venture. This knowledge alone is worth the price of the book. I found ATLAS TO THE WORLD WIDE WEB to be well organized, giving good information on over 700 Web sites. Appendices provide details on plenty of resources including the PDIAL list of public access service providers, sources and ftp sites for browser software and other useful and interesting things. %T Atlas to The World Wide Web %A Bob Powell & Karen Wickre %I Ziff-Davis Press %C Emeryville California %D 1995 %O Contains CD-ROM. $29.95 US, $43.95 Canada %G ISBN:1-56276-308-3 %P 220 pages paperbound, %K Internet, World Wide Web (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
