Review: WHAT'S ON THE INTERNET WINTER 1994/95 by Eric Gagnon, Peachpit 1994 ISBN: 1-56609-162-4 260 pages paperbound $19.95 USA $27.95 Canada Here's yet another guide book to the Internet's riches! This one, WHAT'S ON THE INTERNET is larger in size than the other guides (10-1/2" X 8-1/2") and is focused on the USENET newsgroups and their attendant F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions) files, approximately 21,000 of them and where to get them. The book is divided into fifteen chapters that classify and describe the many and varied newsgroups normally found on the Internet. These include Business, Investment & Consumer Issues, Politics, Support Groups, Hobbies, Travel & Tourism, Headline News, Entertainment & the Media, Computers & Telecommunicat- ions, News & Sports and Local, University & International Newsgroups. WHAT'S ON INTERNET covers the Internet only - doesn't attempt to include any of the conferences found on the commercial on-line providers' systems. The book claims to cover 7,400 talk groups covering any subject imaginable, showing you how to find the groups you need - and tells you how they can help you. The book features an alphabeticized newsgroup directory with over 7000 entries and a master subject index/finder as well. There is a disk available for $5.00 that covers shipping and handling which contains the Internet Newsgroup Finder. I am pleased that buyers are offered this option rather than have to buy the disk they may never use bundled to the book. Gagnon's book is well presented and nicely illustrated. It is a great reference source, especially for USENET "junkies". As far as newsgroups and F.A.Q.s go, its the definitive work in my opinion, of course. I am hoping that Eric Gagnon will make this an annual edition, since change is so rapid on the Net. Gagnon and his USENET encyclopedia definitely fill a niche in the wall called The Internet.
