REVIEW: VAN SICKLE'S MODERN AIRMANSHIP 7th ed. John F Welch, ed. TAB 1995 This encyclopedic book which covers virtually every aspect of flying was originally written by Neil D Van Sickle, Major General, U.S.A.F. (ret'd) in 1957. It has been used by pilots to improve their flying skills for over 30 years. The new seventh edition, dated 1995 and ably edited by Colonel John Welch updates and expands this classic flying book to include new aviation technologies and flight procedures including the all- important new FAA airspace designations It is not a quick, easy read - but is a straightforward and highly readable reference book that covers essential flight principles, techniques and performance standards. The contents cover a broad range of aviation and related subjects, such as basic aerodynamics, theory of flight, airframes, engines, instruments, avionics, weather, basic flight techniques, and navigation. Advanced topics include aeromedicine, instrument flight, higher-performance aircraft, air traffic control, helicopters, soaring and Northern/wilderness flying. The final chapter, The Leading Edge, deals with the newest developments such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), new aircraft designs, hypersonic flight and more. In my opinion, VAN SICKLE'S MODERN AIRMANSHIP is THE singular "has-it-all" book on general aviation. There are, of course, many other books dealing with more specialized flight and aviation subjects, but if there were room on my bookshelf for only one book about flying, there's no question it'd be MODERN AIRMANSHIP! %T Van Sickle's Modern Airmanship, 7th ed. %A John F Welch, ed %I TAB/McGraw-Hill %C Blue Ridge Summit, PA %D 1995 %O $44.95 %G ISBN: 0-07-069184-3 %P 1056 pp Hardbound %K Aviation, flight, airplanes (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
