REVIEW: SIMPLE INTERNET by Jeffrey M Cogswell, The Waite Group 1994 ISBN: 1-878739-79-4 paperbound 162 pages $16.95 USA, $23.95 Canada SIMPLE INTERNET uses a innovative approach to teaching basic Internet skills - it is actually a mystery novel in which the reader assumes the identity of Archie Finger, Ace Private Eye. You'll unravel the mystery of the Simple Internet Connection. SIMPLE INTERNET makes no assumptions of previous experience or knowledge. It's only requirements are a computer with a terminal emulation program and a modem. It also requires access to a UNIX SHELL account and will teach us how to work with the % prompt which is, in my opinion, a valuable skill akin to knowing basic DOS. Some of the subjects covered are e-mail, USENET NEWS, mailing lists, LISTSERV, FTP, TELNET, FAQs, compresses/uuencoded files, netiquette, Archie and Veronica. There are chapters featuring "Cool" and "Fun" Things" to try on your own. In my opinion, SIMPLE INTERNET is aimed at young people and its novel approach is different from all other basic "how-to" Internet books I've seen. The illustrations and graphics remind me of the comic books of my youth. I can see a place for SIMPLE INTERNET in the youth section of public and school libraries. It would also make a nice gift.
