REVIEW: MASTERING THE INTERNET, Cady & McGregor SYBEX 1995 The only word to describe this book is awesome! It contains over 1200 pages that will truly do what the title says - master the Internet (if such mastery is possible at all, given the fact that it is constantly changing). It is not really a "newbie" book, although the authors claim that if you've never used the Net before it will help you get started. It certainly looks intimidating, but once you open the cover and start reading you'll find its quite friendly and informative. MASTERING THE INTERNET is divided into four parts. Part 1 deals with becoming an effective net user. Part 2 covers becoming an information provider - how to use the basic tools to build an online presence for your company or organization. Part 3 gives you plenty of Internet resources - newsgroups, WWW pages, archives, mailing lists, etc and Part 4 contains a comprehensive glossary of terminology and net jargon. The appendices provide information on subjects ranging from netiquette to selected FTP sites where you can visit and download all kinds of great and neat stuff. MASTERING THE INTERNET comes with two software packages - NetCruiser SLIP software, which is of use only if you wish to sign up for the service offered by Netcom and the Chameleon Sampler Disk that provides you with a set of tools you can use if you already have an account with an Internet service provider. My evaluation of MASTERING THE INTERNET is based on a three hour browse through the chapters - and I could not think of a net-related topic that was not covered. It is one of these rare dual purpose works - a How-to and a reference for all levels of skill and competence. Its a wonderous achievement and well worth the $40.00 price tag. %T Mastering the Internet %A Glee Hurrah Cady & Pat McGregor %I SYBEX %C Alameda California %D 1995 %O $39.99 %G ISBN: 0-7821-1645-0 %P 1258 pp %K Internet, computer networks (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
