REVIEW: HOW COMPUTERS WORK includes CD-ROM Ziff Davis Press 1994 I first borrowed this title from the local library and found it very informative. This newest version which includes an interactive CD-ROM is certainly no disappointment. The most outstanding aspect of HOW COMPUTERS WORK is without doubt the illustrations, done by Timothy Edward Downs. They're absolutely beautiful! The graphics really help you to understand how everything works. Some of the concepts explained are: the power-on self-test (POST), disk boot up, the Operating System, memory, RAM cache, hard, floppy and CD-ROM disk drives, tape backups, keyboards, displays, serial and parallel ports. Also included are different kinds of printers, scanners and a whole lot more. The CD-ROM is also quite remarkable - there's a lot of neat stuff to see. It takes you on an exploratory three-dimensional guided tour of the multimedia equipped PC, including video interviews and computing tips and tricks. Its virtually an animated version of the book and much more. You can access thousands of MicroSoft Windows tips from the experts at PC/Computing magazine as well as a unique almanac of computing information and buyers' advice from many Ziff Davis Press books. The CD-ROM is a great enhancement to the original book. This title definitely belongs in the reference section of every school and public library. %T HOW COMPUTERS WORK %A Ron White %I Ziff Davis Press %C Emeryville California %D 1994 %O includes interactive CD-ROM, $39.95 %G ISBN1-56276-250-8 %P 202 pp %K personal computers, multimedia (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
