REVIEW: CD-ROM POCKET GUIDE, Richard A Bowers, ed. Pemberton Press 1995 Reviewing a periodical is a bit of a break from my usual book reviews, but it can be successfully argued that 95% of the current Internet books are periodicals too, due to the fast changing world of the Net. THE CD-ROM POCKET GUIDE is published four times a year and contains 5500 listings including 1200 new titles, of CD-ROM based software and databases on a large variety of subjects. I reviewed the Winter 1994-1995 edition and found it to be informative and very useful, especially since I recently acquired a CD-ROM drive. The new titles are listed in a separate section ahead of the main part containing the regular and much larger directory. Both sections are sub-divided into classifications by category of software on the CDs. I found it quite easy to use, both for lookup by category or just plain browsing. In addition to the listings, there is a directory of names, addresses and telephone numbers of publishers, from whom you may purchase any of these titles should they not be available locally. The Winter 1994-1995 issue has an informative article on how to choose a CD-ROM drive and I expect future editions will have equally useful articles as well. Finally, there's a glossary of CD-ROM and related words and expressions. This is the second issue of THE CD-ROM POCKET GUIDE and it looks like it will be the de facto reference to the exciting world of CD-ROM based software and databases. I wish the editor and publishers the best of luck with it. %T CD-ROM POCKET GUIDE %A Richard A Bowers, Ed %I Pemberton Press %C Wilton, Connecticut %D 4 times a year %O Single: $5.95, Annual subscription $16.95 %K computers, CD-ROM, software (C) 1995 Michael Crestohl Nahant Massachusetts USA mc@shore.net DISCLAIMER: I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in the success or failure of the book or materials reviewed herewith, nor have I received any compensation (other than a review copy requested by me) from anyone who has.
